BNP Paribas supports 50Hertz in the energy transition
The transmission system operator 50Hertz plans to convert its electricity grid completely to renewable energies by 2032 and is increasingly relying on smart grid solutions. To this end, 50Hertz, the 100 percent subsidiary of Eurogrid GmbH, plans to invest around 21 billion euros by 2028, four times more than in the past five years. BNP Paribas is supporting 50Hertz with the financing.
With around 1,800 employees, 50Hertz secures the electricity supply for 18 million people in northern and eastern Germany. The company is a leader in the secure integration of renewable energies into grids and systems and is expanding its more than 10,000-kilometer extra-high-voltage grid for the energy transition in an innovative and demand-oriented manner.
BNP Paribas has been supporting 50Hertz for more than ten years with payment solutions as well as various credit and capital market financing. 2020 saw the issuance of the company’s first green bond, with which 50Hertz was able to finance grid connections for two offshore wind farms with a total capacity of around 1.5 gigawatts, among others. In 2023, the bank supported the issuance of the company’s standard bond of €650 million. BNP Paribas is currently developing another source of financing for 50Hertz: a €3 billion syndicated loan, to which BNP Paribas is contributing €250 million in the form of a revolving loan. In this way, the bank is further contributing to the expansion and development of the grid infrastructure for sustainable energy supply in Germany.
